A safe space for learning & development
Education
We believe that education is key to securing a sustainable future for the communities where we work.
Established in 2006, our award-winning, solar powered Education Centre is home to Kenya’s first free children’s library. Equipped with an actively used IT suite - funded by British Airways - and a hub for vocational skills training, our Education Centre supports hundred’s of local schools and acts as a safe space for over 5,000 children a year from informal settlements in and around Mombasa.

How we educate the local community
-
Library
Home to over 12,000 books, the Nguuni Library offers a safe, inspiring space for over 5,000 children from more than 150 schools each year.
Set within the natural sanctuary, it encourages a love of reading and learning in a peaceful, nature-rich environment.
-
IT Suite
At Nguuni, we recognise the vital role digital literacy plays in education and future opportunities. That’s why we established the Nguuni IT Suite—to ensure every child has access to safe, secure, and reliable technology.
Students learn essential digital skills, explore educational content online, and build confidence in using technology to support their learning and personal growth.
-
Auditorium
In addition to our library and IT suite, the Nguuni Nature Sanctuary hosts our solar-powered auditorium, where we show several environmental & educational films each week for both children and adults.
This space is also used for theatre, environmental workshops, health talks and counselling sessions.
-
Butterfly House
Home to a variety of colourful species, the Butterfly House offers visitors a unique opportunity to observe these delicate pollinators up close and learn about their vital role in local ecosystems.
The space is designed not only to enchant but also to educate—highlighting the butterfly life cycle, their role in biodiversity, and the importance of preserving natural habitats.
-
Kitchen Gardens
Our School Kitchen Gardens programme teaches children how to grow their own food while nurturing a strong connection to the land.
By turning small plots into productive gardens, students learn practical skills in sustainable agriculture, composting, and water conservation. These gardens serve as outdoor classrooms where lessons in science, health, and environmental stewardship come to life.
Through hands-on learning, we empower the next generation with the knowledge and tools to build healthier, more self-sufficient communities.
-
School Tours
We offer a number of environmental activities and programmes designed to inspire children to think about the future and how to conserve the land that they live on.
Building awareness for the need to nurture the environment from an early age is crucial because, in the words of Dr. Haller: “Change can take a generation.”
