    Tasneem D

  • “A santuary within urban limits, atop a hill... Giraffes, water bucks, Ostriches roam free and as one visits this place, you can cut off from the city hustle and bustle and enjoy the serene animals as they feed during sunset and come and feed from your hands if you are willing. Small rustic shelters are propped up for visitors to enjoy their picnics or if they want to barbeque their packed foods.... the evenings are spent, sipping your best brought beverages, as the attendants light up a bornfire and you chit chat under the starry skies.”

    Susheka D

  • “What a wonderful part of the world ,.. beautiful, helpful people, you get a real sense of how big this country is when you are out there among the grass and animals. With a decent pair of binoculars you can view the far away animals, but there are animals much closer that you can view , in their own natural environment , this was a totally awesome experience , one I would look forward to repeat anytime... Loved every minute.”

Conservation

Nguuni is a place where visitors can reconnect with the environment while supporting local sustainable development initiatives.

Known as the ‘Green-Lungs of Mombasa’, Nguuni is one of the city’s only natural spaces left for residents and tourists to enjoy. The sanctuary is a vibrant haven for biodiversity, offering a rare glimpse into some of Kenya’s most treasured natural wonders.

Endangered plant species flourish alongside sweeping acacia woodlands, creating a thriving ecosystem for over 300 bird species—many of them rare or endemic. Majestic giraffes, curious ostriches, elegant oryx, and herds of elands roam freely across the landscape, living as they have for generations. Visitors can experience the serenity of this protected environment while witnessing the harmony of wildlife and nature at its purest.

We’re passionate about environmental education, inspiring young people to understand and protect the natural world. Through tailored school tours, interactive activities, engaging lectures, and guided bird walks, we create memorable learning experiences that connect students with conservation in action.

Our History

Not so long ago, Nguuni was uninhabitable. Once a Jurrasic Shale Quarry, Nguuni was nothing more than an abandoned stretch of infertile and discarded land. Yet one man, Dr Rene Haller, gave nature a helping hand and space to grow, restoring the damage caused to the land by prolonged industrial mining activities.

Today, Nguuni stands as a thriving nature sanctuary and one of Mombasa’s last remaining green spaces — a vital refuge where local residents and eco-tourists alike can relax, explore, and reconnect with nature.
